Job Summary
Responsible for performing entry level technical work and related activities associated with planning, engineering, design, analysis, research, development, testing, construction, maintenance, and operation of Company equipment and facilities.
Technician Associate What You’ll Do- Possess technical knowledge from an Associate Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
- Gain knowledge of standards, codes, and regulations relevant to the area of assignment.
- Become familiar with pertinent equipment, materials, systems, and business processes.
- Assist employees in handling defined portions of routine problems when beneficial to AEP.
- Show basic computer literacy, knowledge, and skills.
- Perform work activities as assigned and coached by higher-level employees.
- Work with others in supplying information and seeking assistance as necessary.
- Plan work in accordance with AEP standard planning practices, prioritize routine work, and maintain accurate records.
- Apply technical knowledge to resolve problems, use initiative to improve processes, and increase job knowledge and technical skills.
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with internal and external customers; assist in preparation of technical reports and papers.
- Demonstrate teamwork, a friendly, sincere manner, and willingness to listen to customers.
- Develop decision-making skills based on sound judgment and job knowledge; understand local organizational roles and responsibilities.
- High school diploma or equivalent plus 2 years of related utility industry work experience; or an Associate’s Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering Technology or related fields.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Must reside within 45 minutes of the Fieldale Service Center (80 River Road, Fieldale, VA 24089).
Physical demands vary by location or territory. Technician must be able to:
- Walk through various terrain in adverse conditions to patrol distribution power lines and determine damage.
- Carry and handle telescopic measuring sticks and switching sticks that weigh 11 pounds.
- May be required to use a brush axe (approx. 6 pounds) or machete (approx. 2 pounds) to clear brush for walking and staking in survey work.
- Use knowledge and experience to perform cost-effective work efficiently.
- Exhibit understanding of pertinent equipment, materials, systems, and processes.
- Possess intermediate-level computer literacy.
- Understand and follow appropriate policies and procedures; provide training and guidance to employees when beneficial.
- Develop knowledge of time constraints for work activities and adjust accordingly.
- Actively seek information to increase technical knowledge and job skills.
- Contribute to team goals; network with peers to share information and encourage cooperation.
- Understand corporate goals and develop win‑win relationships.
- Use decision-making skills to perform the job more efficiently and cost-effectively.
- Associate Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering Technology or related fields plus 2 years of related utility industry experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and 4 years of related utility industry experience.
- Valid Driver’s License.

$31.72–$36.41 per hour
