BasicJob Functions:
Nucor Insulated Panel Group (NIPG) is seeking a self‑motivated person who enjoys coordinating projects and priorities, can think outside the box, and understands how their work impacts performance at an enterprise level. This position reports to the Research & Development Supervisor and is primarily responsible for the research, design development, and testing necessary to bring ideas to market. Daily execution of these responsibilities includes collaboration with and indirect supervision of Engineering Lab Technicians on assigned Nucor innovation projects.
Although creativity is critical to success, the candidate must also possess good communication and people skills to clearly report progress and challenges to schedule, design or budget as they arise. The Project Engineer III position is not entry‑level and requires specific experience in sandwich panel theory, testing and analysis, as this product type is the foundation of what we produce for the commercial building market.
Activities require the candidate to lead the innovation process to ensure an orderly and timely progression, provide subject‑matter support in internal matters and vendor partner exploration, and actively participate in research, product development and testing. The position is designed to work closely with and support the activities of Product Managers, Sales Leaders, Application Engineering & Design Personnel, Operations, and, in a more general sense, all entities of the Nucor organization.

- Work to develop, assess, and improve or reject the technical feasibility of new product concepts
- Ability to collect and organize data from ideation, research, testing and analysis and clearly convey the work in presentations and discussions to the intended audience
- Responsible for determining what tasks are required to achieve project goals, and then scheduling and monitoring work to achieve results
- Attend trade meetings and educational sessions to become familiar with market needs and technological advances
Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
Minimum Qualifications:A minimum of 5 years of experience in commercial sandwich panel design and 5 years of engineering experience in commercial construction.
A minimum Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Materials Engineering.
Experience with and a working knowledge of various building codes and material design specifications.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Have subject matter expertise in areas of:
- statics and mechanics
- product design
- product testing
- heat transfer and thermodynamics
- code‑based regulatory requirements
- plant processes, machine and tooling design
- ideation process
- Continual reaching and using hands
- Continual talking and hearing
- Occasional standing, frequent walking and continual sitting
- Occasional stooping or kneeling
- Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
- Vision abilities include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus
