The Special Assets Specialist supports the administration, monitoring, and resolution of classified, delinquent, and non-performing loans within the Bank’s portfolio. This role ensures accurate tracking, reporting, and execution of collection, recovery, and loan workout activities while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements and internal controls.
As the role progresses , responsibilities expand from process execution and administrative support to independent portfolio management, complex loan resolution, and strategic influence on recovery outcomes, policy development, and risk mitigation. The position works closely with Credit Administration, Loan Operations, legal counsel, and senior leadership to manage risk and maximize recovery.
Loan Workout, Recovery & Portfolio Management (65%):
- Administers and supports the management of delinquent, non-accrual, and adversely classified loans, including tracking, monitoring, and resolution activities.
- Supports or manages loan workout strategies, including collection efforts, repayment plans, and resolution actions.
- Assists with or leads foreclosure, repossession, and recovery processes in accordance with Bank policy and regulatory requirements.
- Supports or administers bankruptcy cases, including documentation tracking, proof of claim preparation, and coordination with legal counsel.
- Monitors borrower performance, payment activity, and recovery progress, ensuring timely follow-up and escalation as needed.
- Maintains accurate records of loan status, recovery activity, expenses, and outcomes
Monitoring, Reporting & Risk Administration (20%):
- Maintains and updates tracking systems for loan performance, collateral, real estate taxes, deceased borrower accounts, and recovery efforts.
- Prepares periodic reports, including portfolio status, delinquency trends, and recovery activity for management review.
- Performs procedures, analysis, and supporting functions related to the estimation process for the allowance for credit losses (ACL).
- Maintains models of expected losses for the ACL, including reconciliation of data inputs, documentation of estimates and judgments, and preparation of summary reports for management.
- Ensures all records are complete, accurate, and audit-ready in accordance with internal and regulatory expectations.
Customer, Legal & Internal Partner Coordination (10%):
- Serves as a point of contact for borrower inquiries, internal stakeholders, and third parties related to Special Assets activities.
- Coordinates with Loan Operations, Credit, and legal counsel to ensure consistent execution of loan servicing, documentation, and recovery actions.
- Supports communication efforts related to delinquent accounts, bankruptcy proceedings, and borrower status updates.
Administrative, Compliance & Operational Support (5%):
- Maintains organized documentation and ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Completes required training and supports audit and examination processes.
- Participates in special projects and process improvement initiatives.
Education and Experience:
- 2–5 years of relevant experience; foundational knowledge of loan servicing and collections.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
- Progressive experience in banking, credit administration, collections, or loan operations required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of loan servicing, collections practices, and credit administration processes.
- Working knowledge; applies established procedures with guidance.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements related to collections, bankruptcy, and consumer lending.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and banking systems.
Travel
0-10 %, as required.
Physical demands:
Standard office environment with extended periods of computer use, sitting, and occasional standing or walking.
Work Environment:
Work is performed onsite in an operational office environment.
