Position Title
Finance Assistant-Payroll
Description
This position performs skilled technical work in preparing, maintaining, and processing payroll and related records. Duties involve complex computations both manual and automated related to wage calculations, overtime, supplemental pay, taxes, and various voluntary and involuntary deductions (e.g., health insurance, Virginia Retirement System contributions). The role requires strong attention to detail and accuracy in assembling, calculating, and organizing complex data. Work is performed under general supervision, with responsibility for managing schedules to ensure the timely and accurate completion of tasks.
Reports To
Chief Financial Officer
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)
- High School Diploma; college degree or specialized training in bookkeeping/accounting preferred.
- Experience with automated payroll processing is preferred.
- General knowledge of payroll tax withholding laws, legal requirements for court-ordered deductions (e.g., child support, garnishes, bankruptcy), and other applicable programs
- Proficiency with computer software, including advanced Microsoft Excel functions, preferred.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Knowledge of state and local payroll accounting laws and regulations.
- Ability to accurately organize and analyze complex data with attention to detail.
- Ability to follow complex oral and written directions and to prepare complex fiscal reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, and the public.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
- Overuse of sick, personal, and vacation leave.
- Ensuring employees receive pay that will correspond to the correct total amount for each year.
- Ensuring accuracy of employee and employer shares of deductions, including VRS, health insurance, and other voluntary/involuntary deductions.
