Location: Colonial Beach

Supervises, plans, organizes, and coordinates activities of law enforcement/public safety units assigned to a division of the department. Answers to either the Patrol Operations Lieutenant or Support Services Lieutenant based on assignment. Provides essential law enforcement and public safety services to the community. Acts to enforce criminal laws, traffic regulations and maintain public order. Patrols designated areas utilizing police vehicles. Conducts criminal and vehicle accident investigations.

Effects arrests and testifies in court. Performs related work as required. Position requires working a rotating shift schedule.

Requirements Example of Duties
  • Supervises the activities of subordinates on a daily basis to include during shift assignment. Performs patrol, investigative and all other duties as assigned.
  • Ensures that adequate staff are assigned to cover shifts.
  • Reviews essential information at beginning of or during shift; conducts briefing session; answers questions and participates in discussion of information.
  • Analyzes reports prepared and submitted by subordinates for accuracy, completeness, essential elements, fundamental soundness, and substantiation of action taken prior to forwarding to Division Lieutenant..
  • Disseminates applicable review and revised policies and procedures to subordinates; explains implications.
  • Analyzes difficult situations or problems presented by subordinate staff and recommends action to be taken or appropriate method or procedure to use.
  • Compiles information for and writes periodic statistical reports on work unit activities and submits to supervisor.
  • Analyzes activity reports to determine levels of performance or need for corrective action.
  • Attends supervisory staff meetings; gives and receives information; participates in problem solving; recommends policy changes and program development to superiors.
  • Investigates complaints against staff to satisfaction of all parties; recommends action to be taken to Division Lieutenant.
Qualifications Required Education & Experience

High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Bachelor's Degree

Thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department; thorough knowledge of approved principles, procedures, and methods of police administration; thorough knowledge of pertinent Federal and State laws and Town ordinances; thorough knowledge of the modern methods and practices of criminal investigation and identification; good knowledge of the geography of the Town and the location of important buildings; skill in the use of firearms;

ability to command the respect of officers and to assign, direct and supervise their work; ability to make maximum utilization of personnel; ability to deal with the public courteously and firmly, and to establish and maintain satisfactory relationships with the public; and the physical ability to perform the job. Skill in the use of non-lethal weapons.
