Corrections Officer Position

Base Pay: $18.68 Hourly

Required Test:
All applicants will be required to take the law enforcement civil service exam (LECSE) implemented August 2017.

The primary purpose of the corrections officer position is to guard, observe, and transport inmates.

Officer enforces the rules and policies of the facility and ensures that the safety and welfare of inmates and staff are safeguarded.

This is a trainee position that involves required completion of academy and field training including closely supervised performance of corrections officer duties.

The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.

May, under close supervision, perform corrections officer duties, including:

• Attending training academy to become a certified jailer.
• Booking, classifying, observing, transferring, transporting, and releasing inmates with attention to the health, safety, and security of other officers, inmates, and the public.
• Conducting inspections, shakedowns, inmate searches, and making key checks.
• Conducting head counts of inmates.
• Completing, checking, and processing official papers and documents.
• Intervening and resolving crisis situations such as fights, fires, and medical emergencies.
• Restraining combative inmates.
• Serving or supervising the serving of meals to inmates.
• Supervising inmates while they are performing their cleaning duties.
• Providing informal counseling to inmates.
• Conducting safety inspections and inspections of fire exits.
• Assisting with the personal needs of inmates, such as telephone calls, mail, laundry, visits, and commissary.

Supervisory responsibilities:

Does not supervise any employees directly.

However, is involved in the direct supervision of the activities of from one to 58 inmates at a time.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Responsibilities include addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); eighteen years of age and a citizen of the United States.

All successful candidates must consent to a criminal background check and are required to achieve TCOLE certification as a corrections officer within twelve months of appointment.

Language skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Reasoning ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
