Pharmacy Technician - PRN Job Summary

Pharmacy technicians, under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, assist in the various activities of the pharmacy department not requiring professional judgment of the pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians will function in strict accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines, any deviation from which must be approved by the supervising pharmacist.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist pharmacists in pharmacy operations, adhering to local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Provide support to healthcare providers and patients by greeting, answering questions, and referring inquiries to the pharmacist.
  • Maintain awareness of community and pharmaceutical developments and integrate them into practices.
  • Participate in the training and orientation of new employees and students.
  • Manage pharmacy inventory by monitoring stock levels, ordering supplies, verifying receipts, and removing expired drugs.
  • Ensure a safe and clean pharmacy environment by complying with regulations and procedures.
  • Contribute to team efforts by assisting with related tasks as needed.
  • Screen telephone calls for the pharmacist as appropriate.
  • Assist with filling and labeling prescriptions.
  • Organize medications for dispensing, including preparing labels and calculating quantities.
  • Maintain records by filing physicians’ orders and prescriptions.
  • Handle revenue tasks, such as calculating and recording charges.
  • Prepare reports by collecting and summarizing information.
  • Foster effective team collaboration, respect patient rights, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills in pharmacy services, including medical terminology, drug classifications, calculations, and federal/state laws.
  • Exhibit flexibility and organization while working under stressful situations.
  • Respond appropriately to patient emergencies and physically distressing situations.
  • Comply with infection control guidelines and use personal protective equipment.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support hospital operations.
  • Participate in required training and complete all assigned educational activities.
  • Attend department and hospital meetings as required.
  • Adhere to all Bath Community Hospital policies and procedures.

Professional Requirements
  • Maintain a professional appearance and meet dress code standards.
  • Complete annual educational requirements and certification renewals.
  • Report to work on time and as scheduled.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in medical terminology, calculations, and computer knowledge.
Regulatory Requirements
  • National certification.
  • CPR certification.
  • Registration with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.
  • Adherence to federal, state, and local laws governing pharmacy practice.
Physical and Environmental Demands
  • Frequent standing, walking, and hand‑eye coordination.
  • Regular lifting of items up to 25 pounds and occasional lifting of heavier items.
  • Exposure to moderate noise, indoor conditions, and occasional exposure to chemicals.
  • Use of personal protective equipment as required.
