Overview

The Paramedic administers life support care and transport to patients in pre-hospital settings as authorized and directed by a physician. The role involves providing a range of acute and non-acute medical care in ground and/or air transport, responding to emergency calls, and administering cardiac, trauma, and pediatric support. The position requires assessment of patient response, adaptation of care plans, and coordination with medical command centers.

Responsibilities
  • Administer life support care and transport to patients in pre-hospital settings.
  • Perform a variety of skills in acute and non-acute settings, including ground and air transport, and respond to 9-1-1 emergency calls.
  • Provide cardiac and trauma support, deliver initial treatment at the emergency scene, and adjust interventions as needed.
  • Gather and analyze patient information, use sound reasoning when dealing with emotional topics, and manage difficult customer situations while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize medical procedures and determine the need for additional assistance.
  • Synthesize complex information to make clinical decisions.
  • Restore and stabilize heart rhythm in pulseless, non-breathing patients.
  • Initiate intravenous drugs and fluids, and administer emergency procedures such as patient extrication, intubation, and defibrillation under ACLS protocol.
  • Administer injections of medications and drugs and initiate invasive and non-invasive advanced treatments for life-threatening arrhythmias, respiratory compromise, shock, trauma, and pediatric cases.
  • Observe, record, and report patient condition and response to treatments to the physician or command center leader.
  • Maintain current knowledge of treatment techniques, protocol changes, and new drug applications.
  • Take responsibility for personal actions and oversee the support team.
  • Prepare required reports and maintain records of all activities.
  • Obtain patient information needed for insurance billing and understand covered versus non-covered charges for ambulance services.
  • Coordinate activities with external entities when necessary.
  • Check daily units assigned, clean and stock supplies, and report any malfunctions to the in-house mechanic.
  • Maintain supplies and use resources appropriately.
  • Transport patients to hospitals and non-hospital sites while following safety guidelines.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Experience: No prior experience required.
  • Licensure/Certification: Certified as a Paramedic in the state of Virginia; must hold AHA BLS-HCP, ACLS, PALS, Haz Mat Awareness, NRP, and PHTLS or BTLS within one year of hire.
  • Maintain advanced transport medical knowledge and abilities.
  • Maintain an excellent driving record and be able to operate the vehicle to emergency scenes.
  • Meet state and national continuing education requirements for recertification.
  • Manage difficult customer situations with effective communication skills.
  • Write clearly and present numerical data and patient reports effectively.
  • Show basic computer proficiency and familiarity with relevant software.
Compensation

Base pay ranges from $25.77 to $38.66 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Benefits and pension plans are not included in this range.

Work Environment

All driving positions require a copy of your current driving record and compliance with driver eligibility requirements.
