How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare
The Emergency Medical Technician administers basic life support care and transports patients in pre‑hospital settings as authorized and directed by physicians. The role requires responding to medical emergencies in a 911 setting, protecting life, and administering cardiac and trauma support when needed. EMTs initiate treatments, assess patient response, and adjust care as necessary.
Responsibilities- Provide basic life support care and ground transportation to patients in acute and non‑acute settings.
- Respond to 911 medical emergencies, administer cardiac and trauma support, including extrication and defibrillation.
- Administer medications and initiate treatments at the basic level.
- Assess the nature and extent of illness or injury; prioritize medical procedures and determine need for additional assistance.
- Observe, record, and report patient condition, drug reactions, treatments, and significant incidents to physicians or command center personnel.
- Utilize excellent communication skills with staff, peers, patients, and families in diverse situations.
- Maintain confidentiality and manage difficult customer situations.
- Keep current with treatment techniques, protocol changes, and new drugs, materials, and equipment.
- Coordinate activities with external entities, prepare required reports, and maintain accurate records of activities.
- Obtain all information needed for insurance billings and understand covered versus non‑covered charges for ambulance services.
- Maintain knowledge of state and federal laws, Carilion policies, and safety and patient‑care protocols.
- Maintain ongoing continuing education to meet re‑certification requirements per state and national standards.
- Conduct pre‑transport vehicle checks, maintain cleanliness and supplies, and report malfunctions to the in‑house mechanic.
- Ensure cost efficiency in the use of supplies and resources.
- Transport patients to hospital and non‑hospital sites following safety guidelines.
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- Certified Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Virginia.
- Must hold an AHA BLS‑HCP certification.
- HAZMAT Awareness and PHTLS or BTLS Basic certification required within one year of hire.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to maintain continuing education hours to meet recertification status per state and national standards.
Base pay ranges from $20.10 to $28.14 per hour, depending on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience. Benefits and pension plan are not included in this range.
