Speech Language Pathologist

The Speech Language Pathologist assists in developing speech and language skills to facilitate the personal, social, and intellectual development of students. In order to respond to the individual needs and abilities of students, the Speech Language Pathologist must work closely with the staff and administration of the school district.

Essential duties and typical tasks include screening, assessing, diagnosing, and treating school-age children with speech, language, and communication disorders. The Speech Language Pathologist must maintain compliance of federal and state regulations regarding referrals, eligibility, Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and implementation. They establish a positive therapeutic environment to respond to individual needs of students while collaborating with family/caregivers and professionals from other disciplines.

They serve as a resource to school staff members in the development of a balanced program for oral communication and speech improvement. They assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language impairments. They maintain regular data collection, progress monitoring/reporting, and thorough ongoing records for the individual student receiving therapy or other school-provided speech services.

They assume primary responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies. They perform other duties as assigned.

The candidate must be knowledgeable of best practice in speech language pathology and special education of students with disabilities ages 2-21. Knowledge of special education laws and regulations is required. The candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to function effectively as a team member in determining appropriate services for the children through such meetings as Eligibility, IEP, etc. The candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and possess or be eligible to acquire appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

The candidate must be skilled in the use of standard office software. They must be able to provide their own transportation to school-related functions, community agencies, and schools throughout the division. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required. Demonstrated qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, staff, administrators, and parents are required. They must possess good moral character.

Positions that are itinerant will involve frequent traveling between schools. Terms of employment are a 10 month contract; salary range based on experience. The Supervisor of Special Education will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
