The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for coordinating the daily operations of the phlebotomy team to ensure efficient, high-quality patient care and specimen collection. This role performs phlebotomy and specimen collection while ensuring accurate patient identification, proper specimen handling, and timely transport to the laboratory.

Key responsibilities include organizing daily phlebotomy workloads and collection batches, managing workflow, maintaining inventory, ordering supplies, and ensuring adequate stock levels. The Lead Phlebotomist provides training and onboarding for new employees, assists with staff scheduling, troubleshoots routine operational issues, and serves as a resource for team members. This position works closely with and provides operational support to the Support Services Manager to ensure compliance with laboratory policies, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
Licensure/Certification
  • Certification in Phlebotomy
Experience
  • Three years of phlebotomy experience in a healthcare setting
  • Ability to collect adult and pediatric patients in hospital, outpatient, or long-term care facility
  • Progressive leadership experience preferred

Job Duties:
  • Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) for inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy practices and specimen collection.
  • Coordinate daily workflow to ensure efficient, timely, and accurate patient care services.
  • Monitor staffing needs and make schedule adjustments to maintain appropriate coverage.
  • Assist the Support Services Manager with staff scheduling and operational planning.
  • Train, onboard, mentor, and support new and existing phlebotomy team members.
  • Monitor staff competency and provide ongoing coaching to promote best practices and quality performance.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and patient safety standards.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of phlebotomy supplies and equipment.
  • Perform venipuncture, capillary collections, and specimen handling according to established protocols.
  • Promote specimen quality by ensuring accurate patient identification, labeling, and collection techniques.
  • Interact professionally and compassionately with patients, visitors, providers, and healthcare colleagues.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to questions, concerns, and follow-up requests.
  • Collaborate with the Support Services Manager and interdisciplinary teams to improve departmental operations and patient service.
  • Demonstrate regular attendance, punctuality, dependability, and flexibility to meet operational needs.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of departmental and organizational goals.
