Position: Clinical Dietitian (CAP I) - N/E
Location: Tazewell

Job Overview

Part-time RD position (16-29 hrs/week) covering inpatients at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital. Hybrid remote coverage available. Weekend coverage 6-8 times per year. Flexible schedule.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and provide medical nutrition therapy and client education for inpatients and outpatients ranging from neonates to geriatrics.
  • Conduct individualized nutrition assessment, evaluation, and implement appropriate medical nutrition therapy approaches.
  • Provide advanced and specialized nutrition support and communicate recommendations for changes in patient treatment plans to physicians and hospital staff.
  • Document recommendations, monitor changes, and track patient outcomes.
  • Facilitate development and implementation of policies, procedures, and protocols related to nutrition care.
  • Evaluate and track data for outcomes and related performance improvement measures and make recommendations to improve quality.
  • Develop and oversee patient and staff educational materials regarding evidence-based medical nutrition therapy.
  • Serve as nutrition resource to the healthcare team.
  • Respond to inpatient consults and outpatient referrals and establish appropriate plan of care.
  • Assess nutritional status of inpatients and outpatients of all ages and recommend appropriate nutrition interventions.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to assess patients of all ages.
  • Develop, implement, and document nutritional plan of care in the medical record, collaborating with other health care providers and document follow‑up.
  • Identify and document evidence‑based criteria to support a physician’s diagnosis of malnutrition.
  • Coordinate documentation with Clinical Documentation Integrity medical coders to accurately reflect clinical care.
  • Calculate, evaluate, and document specialized and advanced enteral and parenteral nutrition support according to ASPEN guidelines.
  • Collaborate with inpatients and outpatients to identify individualized educational needs and coordinate individual and group instructional activities.
  • Serve as nutrition educator for individuals and groups; plan and provide presentations for public, civic organizations, business and industry, and healthcare providers.
  • Conduct media interviews and write articles for publication.
  • Serve as clinical preceptor for dietetic interns (if needed).
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare team members to develop and implement evidence‑based nutrition protocols and educational programs.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings for inpatient units.
  • Act as liaison between nutrition services and other departments.
  • Cooperate with management and staff to meet departmental goals and objectives.
  • Develop and execute performance improvement and quality assurance projects with the Director of Clinical Nutrition.
  • Monitor and report quality and productivity on a regular and timely basis.
  • Assist the Director of Clinical Nutrition in coordinating activities of flex resource staff.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition or Dietetics (or equivalent). 4 years of experience required for those who graduated before January 1, 2024.
  • Master’s degree required for new Registered Dietitians (RDs) who graduated after January 1, 2024.
  • Completion of an American Dietetic Association approved internship or clinical experience required.
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (R.D.N.) licensure required.
  • Certified Diabetes Educator (C.D.E.) desired for Diabetes Education Program for Critical Care, Oncology and Trauma Services.
  • Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (C.N.S.C.) preferred.
  • Registration eligible to become an RDN required; work under supervision of an RDN; registration to be attained within 90 days of hire.
