Summary

These positions are located in Blue Ridge Parkway in the Maintenance & Engineering Division. The job is a temporary, open continuous vacancy for a full‑time schedule and not to exceed 1039 regular hours.

The incumbent primarily performs a variety of tasks associated with roadside mowing and landscape maintenance. Duties may include:

• Operating farm‑type tractors and PTO‑driven implements, riding mowers, and hand machinery for mowing operations.
• Removing trash and debris from roadway and road sites.
• Operating heavy riding and walking‑type lawn mowers.
• Cutting trees with chainsaw.
• Performing minor and non‑recurring repairs of buildings, structures, facilities, and roads.
• Performing preventative and minor corrective maintenance on tractors and attachments.

Blue Ridge Parkway extends 469 miles from Shenandoah to Great Smoky Mountains. Duty locations are within the four Interpretive Districts:

• Ridge (District Office, Vesuvius VA) – MP 0 to MP 106; counties:
  Nelson, Augusta, Rockbridge, Amherst, Bedford, Botetourt; sites:
  James River, Peaks of Otter, Montebello.
• Plateau (District Office, Floyd VA) – MP 106 to MP 217; counties:
  Roanoke, Botetourt, Bedford, Franklin, Floyd, Patrick, Carroll, Grayson; sites:
  Facy Gap, Rocky Knob, Vinton.
• Highlands (District Office, Laurel Springs NC) – MP 217 to MP 305; counties:
  Ashe, Alleghany, Caldwell, Watauga, Wilkes; sites:
  Benge, Bluffs, Cumberland Knob, Sandy Flat.
• Pisgah (District Office, Oteen NC) – MP 305 to MP 469; counties:
  McDowell, Mitchell, Yancey, Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, Transylvania, Jackson, Swain; sites:
  Balsam, Gillespie Gap, Linville Falls, Oteen, Water Rock Gap.

• U.S. citizenship required.
• Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
• Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
• Direct Deposit enrollment required.
• Possess a valid, active state driver’s license and may need to provide driving records.
• May be required to operate a government or private motor vehicle and complete four‑wheel drive training.
• Uniform and national park service uniform standards compliance required; allowance provided.
• May be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work.
• Occupancy of government quarters may be available.
• Must be 18 years old or 16 years old with specific high school or vocational training status as described.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

• Ability to perform duties without more than normal supervision (screen out).
• Safe driving and interpretation of instructions and blueprints.
• Safe operation of non‑motor vehicle equipment.
• Reliability as a tractor operator.
• Good work practices, keeping equipment and work areas neat and organized.

Candidates should provide detailed experience and training in tractor operation, equipment handling, and maintenance. Include examples of work in varied environmental conditions and equipment maintenance performed.

Paid, unpaid, and volunteer experience (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) that demonstrates required skills will be credited.

Frequent arm/leg movements, bending, and heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs) in rough terrain. Operations may involve steep slopes and possible tractor overturn hazards.
