Responsibilities- Plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of heavy‑equipment crews for refuse disposal, collection, and transportation of solid waste.
- Organize crew tasks, evaluate workloads, and provide coaching and training to staff.
- Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance on vehicles and equipment, keep operational records, and manage the maintenance of grounds and facilities.
- Respond to vehicle incidents, customer complaints, on‑job injuries, and safety violations.
- Ensure that safety protocols and procedures for equipment and vehicles are followed by crew members.
- Operate and load various heavy equipment and vehicles (CDL and non‑CDL), including refuse trucks, forklifts, bobcats, snowplows, and leaf machines.
- Oversee cash collections and perform reconciliations of receipts using a computerized scale system and maintain operational records.
- Provide customer service to internal and external customers.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Serve as Emergency Service Personnel, available 24/7 to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies.
- Supervise crew activities in the field and dispatch work crews.
- Coordinate work with other county or state agencies and/or contractors.
- Inspect sewage systems, plant operating areas, or facilities to ensure proper operation and adherence to safety regulations.
- Utilize a computerized maintenance management system to prioritize preventive and corrective maintenance work orders.
- Perform quality inspections of work performed and initiate corrective action to meet accepted service levels.
- Determine necessary repairs and estimate manpower, materials, supplies, and equipment for work to be contracted, and provide field supervision of contractors.
- Maintain inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Prepare and maintain records of work performed by crews and contractors.
- Supervise subordinate employees, including coaching, counseling, training, and performance evaluations.
- Ensure safety programs are implemented and communicated, and work complies with all safety regulations.
- Serve as the main point of contact on work crews for citizens and residents.
- Reinforce a safety culture and continually seek to expand safety knowledge through training, mentoring, and self‑study.
- Investigate, document, and report safety issues.
- Clearly communicate safety expectations and resolve safety‑related matters in a timely manner.
- Comply with safety competencies.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in the repair and maintenance of sewer lines, facilities, housing, solid waste management systems, or grounds.
- Thorough knowledge of safety regulations and practices applicable to the particular area.
- Thorough knowledge of computers, including a computerized maintenance management system.
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates and to oversee the work of contractors.
- Ability to operate a variety of heavy vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors with regular exposure to severe weather, noxious fumes, high levels of dust, and similar conditions.
- Thorough knowledge of purchasing methods, procedures, and policy.
- Thorough knowledge of automated purchasing/inventory management system.
- Ability to coach, counsel, train, and evaluate employee performance, including safety policies, procedures, and practices.
