- Measure Logs: Determine diameter and length of logs, frequently using a scale stick or measuring tools, to calculate gross and net volume for inventory and accounting purposes.
- Grade Logs: Evaluate wood quality by identifying species and assigning grades based on visible defects such as knots, rot, splits, and sweeps to ensure product quality and appropriate utilization.
- Data Recording: Use handheld computers, data terminals, or paper logs to accurately enter measurements, grades, truck numbers, and other required information, ensuring records are up to date and auditable.
- Marking: Paint identification marks, species, or grade marks on logs for sorting, tracking, and processing downstream.
- Operate Log Loader: Be capable of unloading and loading log trucks when required, coordinating with yard operators and adhering to safety procedures.
Required attributes include reliability, the ability to work outside in seasonal weather, good eyesight, attention to detail, and the ability to stand and move around the yard for extended periods. Previous scaling experience and familiarity with industry grading standards are strongly preferred but not always required; on-the-job training is available for qualified candidates.
