Job OverviewThe Virginia State Police are hiring an Administrative Procedures Specialist in the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division at State Police Headquarters. The position supports VSP’s commitment to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) by:
- Enhancing outreach activities to improve accessibility of the instant check program for firearm dealers and the general public.
- Providing training and instructional information to assist, monitor, and enforce firearm dealer compliance with NICS requirements and Virginia firearm laws.
Knowledge
- State and federal criminal history databases.
Skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Basic computer operations.
- Interpersonal communication.
Abilities
- Read, speak, and write in English.
- Read and interpret policies and procedures; provide clarification.
- Access, retrieve, and interpret state and federal automated records.
- Apply research and analytical methods to criminal arrest and disposition information.
- Travel occasionally, including overnight trips.
- Eligibility to become Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) certified (U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident).
- Valid motor vehicle operator’s license; good driving record required.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.
- High‑school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of VCIN and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) is preferred.
- Direct experience with VCIN and NCIC is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in retrieval and interpretation of criminal arrest and disposition information preferred.
