Responsibilities
- Perform paraprofessional responsibilities in the Circulation section of the Library.
- Check library materials in and out, register patrons, update patron records, prepare daily automated reports, collect overdue fines and fees, and count money in cash drawers.
- Answer telephone inquiries, provide information or refer callers to the appropriate officials.
- Takes requests for reserved materials, acts on computer reports of outdated hold requests, contacts patrons regarding items returned with missing materials or damages, and applies determined charges to patron records.
- Assist patrons in using library equipment such as computers, copiers, and other equipment.
- Collect money for Friends of the Library items and from copiers, and perform daily count reports.
- Read shelves, collect requested items, and pull expired holds.
- Assist with statistical record keeping.
- Assist with training and supervision of less experienced workers.
- Oversee pages and community service workers when the supervisor is unavailable.
- Close and lock the building at the end of the workday.
- High school graduation or equivalent education and experience.
- General knowledge of PCs, Windows, MS Office, and the Internet.
- General knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
- Basic mathematics skills.
- Business English proficiency, depending on assignment.
- Some knowledge of procedures and practices common to a public library system.
- Some knowledge of record keeping and reporting.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to assist patrons in a tactful and courteous manner in person and on the telephone.
Must be able to work a continual floating schedule, including nights and weekends as required.
Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, typewriters, copiers, and calculators; lift up to 25 pounds occasionally; push library carts frequently; stoop, bend, and climb step stools; stand frequently; grip writing implements and use a computer mouse.
