Job DutiesThe Deputy Clerk is assigned operational responsibilities in a high-volume, fast-paced office with frequent deadlines. Ensures the court’s instructions are executed, and legal documents are prepared with accuracy and in accordance with state and local policies. This position provides you with the opportunity to gain extensive knowledge of the day-to-day operations of the Virginia judicial process. You must be committed to providing excellent customer service and enjoy working in a team environment.
Essential Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe Deputy Clerk will perform a wide range of complex clerical and financial tasks. Duties include docket preparation and Judicial support in court, ensuring the court’s instructions are executed and carried out in accordance with the policies and judicial instructions. Duties also include preparing detailed court documents in accordance with established guidelines, automated case management system data entry, scheduling matters for court, preparing correspondence, scanning and filing court documents, and attending court sessions.
Additional responsibilities include answering phones, assisting customers at the counter, assessing fines and costs, and receipting payments, financial transactions, and cash reconciliation. Must be able to multitask, meet strict deadlines, and assume additional responsibilities as assigned by management. The selected individual must deliver a high degree of customer service to the public, interface with agencies and external organizations, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
The most competitive candidates will possess:
High School diploma or equivalent required. Most competitive applicants will have considerable court, business, or office-related experience. Applicants should be highly organized and possess significant knowledge, skills, and abilities in personnel management, time management, and performance management; a positive can-do attitude, and able to follow and explain procedures; and reliable attendance. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and advanced knowledge of office automation systems and computer software are required.
Court experience and experience handling money preferred. Advanced knowledge of office automation systems and computer software required. Discretion and integrity are a must in working with highly sensitive and confidential matters.
Work is primarily performed in an office and courtroom setting. Duties require the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and operate standard office equipment. The employee may be required to lift or carry items weighing up to approximately 10 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
