We are partnering with a growing, privately held structural and misc. steel fabrication company on a confidential search for a Director of Purchasing. This role owns and scales the company’s purchasing and supplier management function, with direct impact on project execution, margins, and operational efficiency.
The Director of Purchasing will lead procurement strategy and day-to-day execution across steel, metals, consumables, and subcontracted services. This is a hands‑on role for a leader who can build scalable processes while staying closely connected to estimating, production, and project teams.
Key Responsibilities Purchasing Leadership & Strategy- Own the purchasing function, including strategy, policies, processes, and performance metrics.
- Develop and execute sourcing strategies aligned with project schedules, growth plans, and market conditions.
- Build and maintain scalable purchasing workflows, controls, and best practices.
- Identify cost‑saving opportunities, vendor consolidation initiatives, and process improvements.
- Build and manage preferred supplier programs and strategic vendor relationships.
- Source and negotiate with mills, service centers, suppliers, and subcontractors on pricing, terms, lead times, and freight.
- Maintain accurate vendor records, pricing histories, and supplier performance data.
- Monitor material availability and proactively address supply risks.
- Partner with Estimating, Project Management, Production, and Operations to forecast material needs and align purchasing timelines.
- Provide material pricing input and cost trends to support accurate bids and margin targets.
- Issue and manage purchase orders, ensuring accuracy and on‑time delivery.
- Establish and oversee inventory practices for commonly stocked materials.
- Work with Accounting to resolve invoice discrepancies and support three-way matching.
- Hire and develop purchasing or materials personnel as the organization scales, as applicable.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, safety standards, and quality requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives related to purchasing, inventory, and material flow.
- 7+ years of purchasing, procurement, or supply chain experience in steel fabrication, metal manufacturing, construction, or industrial environments.
- Strong knowledge of steel products, grades, shapes, and fabrication-related materials.
- Demonstrated success negotiating with mills, service centers, and industrial suppliers.
- Experience building or scaling purchasing functions and supplier programs.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, material specifications, and bills of material.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems and Excel.
- Comfort operating in a fast‑paced, project-driven environment.
