The City of Roanoke is seeking a Communications Supervisor to supervise E-911 communications personnel in the dispatching of Police, Fire, EMS and Public Works equipment and persons usually in response to emergency situations. The successful candidate will disseminate information to the general public and emergency services and oversee the operation of assigned shifts and answers questions as needed. This position requires a high school diploma or general education degree (GED) supplemented by continuing education with some computer software training;
four years related experience and/or training in the field of Public Safety Communications; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to work a combination of 12 hour and 8 hour shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime and power shifts (noon - midnight and 2:30pm - 2:30am) as well as overtime. Must be certified as a Police dispatcher by the DCJS, (Department of Criminal Justice Services), in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Possess and maintain certifications: CPR, EMD, VCIN, CTO.

SUMMARYSupervises communications personnel in the dispatching of Police, Fire, EMS and Public Works equipment and persons usually in response to emergency situations. Disseminates information to the general public and emergency services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Oversees the operation of assigned shifts and answers questions as needed
- Monitors and evaluates the performance of the Communications Personnel
- Schedules shift personnel and approves leave time
- Assigns work stations, coordinates breaks, and assigns emergency fill in duty
- Assures that all members of their shift understand policy changes and general updates
- Receives and transmits messages by radio and maintains radio log on shift work
- Takes telephone calls concerning complaints, passes information on to individuals and makes record of calls
- Handles routine inquiries and refers problems to appropriate units
- Dispatches city vehicles and personnel where and when needed
- Checks equipment to ascertain that it is in good working order
- Reviews tapes to reference complaints or for other general information
- Serves as the liaison to the Communications management staff
- Investigates internal complaints and makes recommendations for corrective action
Supervises approximately 5-6 employees on an assigned shift. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization s policies and applicable laws.
