The Construction Manager (CM) must possess experience commensurate with the proposed role, including experience managing highway construction projects. The position requires a strong working knowledge of roadway and bridge construction, traffic engineering principles, construction means and methods, standard practices and procedures, plans, specifications, and contract administration.
The CM must be thoroughly familiar with applicable VDOT references, including the Road and Bridge Specifications, Road and Bridge Standards, Construction Manual, Inspector Manual, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
This role also requires a comprehensive understanding of construction materials and their performance characteristics, as well as environmental, legal, and safety obligations associated with transportation infrastructure projects.
The Construction Manager must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
- Operation and use of survey equipment, nuclear density gauges, and materials testing devices
- Practical computer skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite and all construction management software platforms utilized by the Department
Additionally, the Construction Manager must be capable of:
- Performing constructability and bidability reviews, along with cost and schedule evaluations
- Supervising, coordinating, and directing construction personnel and work crews
- Reviewing and interpreting roadway and bridge plans, specifications, and contractual documents
- Preparing clear and accurate technical, financial, administrative, and explanatory correspondence
- Effectively managing tasks, priorities, and time to meet project objectives
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
