Physical requirements: This is sedentary and agile work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
Job Summary
:
Building Inspectors ensure that construction is compliant with the approved building plans and the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (VUSBC) for the purpose of ensuring the health and safety of all building occupants. This position holds an integral role in the Department of Community Development and the overall development of the County.
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential duties:
- Enforce building codes
- Contribute to positive public relations by educating architects, engineers, contractors, and the general public on building code requirements
- Operate a county vehicle in the performance of the job duties
- Perform residential and commercial field inspection
- Address non-compliant construction complaints by issuing warning and/or stop order notices
- Perform on-site plan review to determine compliance with building codes
- Answer questions from citizens, contractors, and builders
- Represent the building division in court on code violation cases as required
- Prepare reports and maintain inspection records
- Attend related trainings and team meetings as required
- Perform other job duties as assigned
- Obtain Residential Building Inspection Certification within one (1) year of starting work date
- Understanding of building construction materials and methods during all stages of construction
- Knowledge of State building codes, laws, and county ordinances
- Knowledge of sound engineering and construction techniques and practices
- Knowledge of building codes adopted by the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Knowledge of Spanish language
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, with aptitude to learn new software and systems
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and blueprints accurately
- Possess a valid VA Driver’s License to operate a county vehicle during inspections
- Regular work attendance is required
