A well-established heavy civil construction company with decades of experience in highway infrastructure projects across the Southeast is seeking a Project Engineer III to support major state and federally funded roadway construction projects in the greater Roanoke area, particularly along Interstate 81. The company has a long-standing reputation in asphalt paving and transportation construction and maintains a strong team-oriented culture.
The Project Engineer III will work closely with owners, prime contractors, inspectors, and field personnel to schedule, coordinate, and successfully complete milling and paving operations on large-scale transportation projects.
Responsibilities- Oversee both long- and short-term scheduling for projects in accordance with construction phasing
- Coordinate with internal teams to ensure personnel, equipment, and materials are available for each shift
- Establish and communicate daily work plans and production goals
- Identify and communicate potential safety or constructability concerns
- Maintain accurate daily production records including quantities, locations, and jobsite activity
- Distribute reports and production/safety updates to all involved stakeholders
- Collaborate with inspectors and quality control staff to ensure DOT specifications are met
- Sequence construction activities to maximize efficiency while minimizing safety risks to workers and the traveling public
- Coordinate regularly with owners and general contractors to maintain project schedules and milestones
- Monitor project costs against estimates to support budget compliance
- Resolve unforeseen field issues professionally and efficiently
- Work night shifts as required by project schedules and DOT work-hour restrictions
- Ability to read and interpret highway construction plans
- Strong understanding of construction survey grades
- Experience managing construction crews and roadway projects
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Experience with asphalt milling and paving operations preferred
- Experience on DOT transportation projects, including Design-Build and Bid-Build work, preferred
- Degree in Civil Engineering or a related construction field preferred (relevant experience may substitute)
- 5+ years of highway construction experience preferred
- Strong interpersonal and leadership abilities
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required
