Role at a GlanceThe Data Center Technician Apprentice is an entry‑level position that works closely with Data Center Technicians to develop and enhance knowledge of the data center electrical, mechanical, plumbing, control, and fire life safety systems. The role supports operational integrity and regulatory compliance, maximizes customer uptime cost‑effectively, and ensures prompt identification, escalation, and repair of data center problems. The apprentice will learn through hands‑on work, training, performing tasks, and assisting in building rounds and maintenance.
ESSENTIALDUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in multiple facility systems, including Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Life Safety, and Building Monitoring and Control.
Mechanical: data center cooling solutions (chilled water systems, HVAC units such as rooftop, split, DX, CRAC/CRAH, humidification, and Kyoto Cooling where applicable).
Electrical: critical power distribution from utility/generator to UPS and out to customer load, including load bank operations.
Plumbing: all water supply piping, fixtures, meters, backflow prev enters, heaters, boilers, drinking fountains, sinks, drains, traps, and roof drain systems.
Control systems: electrical and mechanical controls operations and user knowledge.
Fire Life Safety: wet and pre‑action sprinklers and associated fire detection and control systems.
Work with contractors and consultants for system expansions, corrections, and upgrades.
Work with CFOps Data Center Technicians to determine maintenance requirements for all systems.
Assist in tracking, documenting, and completing a preventive and predictive maintenance schedule.
Ensure the data center operates at maximum efficiency, analyzing existing conditions, recommending new approaches, and reducing costs.
Manage systems to avoid unplanned, customer‑impacting events.
Manage data floor load and back‑of‑house/hotel load capacity to optimize power and cooling efficiency.
Perform data trending, tracking, and analysis; provide feedback to DCO Engineering on standards and processes.
Develop technical writing skills for preventive or corrective maintenance procedures.
Install hot and cold aisle isolation barriers.
Maintain client cages on the data floor.
Order, track, and restock consumable items and parts at the lowest cost.
Regular, predictable attendance is essential for satisfactory performance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESDemonstrated technical ability relevant to data center operations and innovative cross‑functional thinking.
Entry‑level knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems used in data centers: distribution, transformers, PLCs, generators, switch gear, UPS, STS, ATS, PDUs, chilled water systems, CRAC/CRAH units, pre‑action sprinkler systems.
Entry‑level knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and building code / fire life safety compliance.
Entry‑level industrial safety best practices (lockout/tagout, arc flash protection, OSHA and state regulations).
Rapid learning and use of PC‑based, integrated monitoring and control systems.
Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
Team player, able to work in a high‑stress, fast‑paced environment with shifting priorities.
Ability to respond to emergency situations, work outside normal business hours (weekends, nights, holidays, on‑call).
Effective verbal, visual, and listening communication skills.
Good problem‑solving skills.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or GED required.
Associate of Science in Technology or equivalent education and/or work experience desired.
CPR/First Aid and NFPA 70E certification obtained during employment.
OSHA‑approved forklift certification or ability to obtain one after employment.
