A growing heavy civil construction company specializing in highway and asphalt paving projects is seeking a Junior Project Engineer to support roadway construction operations in the greater Roanoke area, including work along Interstate 81. This role is ideal for an early-career construction professional looking to gain hands-on experience in highway construction, project coordination, and field operations while working alongside experienced project teams.

The Junior Project Engineer will assist with scheduling, field coordination, production tracking, and communication between project stakeholders to help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with daily and weekly project scheduling activities
  • Coordinate with field crews, subcontractors, and internal departments to support project operations
  • Help communicate daily work plans and shift goals to project personnel
  • Support field teams in identifying and addressing safety or constructability concerns
  • Maintain daily production reports including quantities completed, work locations, and jobsite activities
  • Assist with documentation and distribution of project updates and reports
  • Work closely with inspectors and quality control personnel to ensure project specifications are met
  • Support project phasing and traffic control efforts to maintain safe and efficient operations
  • Attend coordination meetings with project stakeholders as needed
  • Track project progress and assist with cost and production monitoring
  • Help resolve field issues under the guidance of senior project staff
  • Willingness to work night shifts as required by project schedules and DOT work-hour restrictions
Qualifications
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans preferred
  • Basic understanding of construction surveying and grades preferred
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Interest in highway construction, asphalt paving, and heavy civil operations
  • Internship or field experience in construction is a plus
  • Experience with DOT projects or roadway construction preferred but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred (or currently pursuing degree)
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced field environment
  • Strong problem-solving and teamwork skills
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record required
