We’re Hiring:Emergency 911 Telecommunicator
Location: Martinsville‑Henry County 911 Communications Center
Schedule: Full‑time | Shift may vary
Salary: $41,462 to $51,231 annually (effective July 1, 2026)
The Martinsville‑Henry County 911 Communications Center is the first point of contact for residents and visitors experiencing emergencies in our community. Telecommunicators are the critical link between the public and law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical personnel who respond when it matters most.
What You Will Do- Receive and process emergency and non‑emergency calls from the public
- Dispatch law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services for a wide variety of incidents
- Accurately receive, document, and transmit information via radio, telephone, and computer systems
- Monitor multiple communication channels simultaneously while maintaining composure under pressure
- Operate computer‑aided dispatch (CAD) systems and related communications technology
- Maintain working knowledge of the Martinsville‑Henry County geographical area to support accurate and timely response
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Ability to remain calm and perform effectively in high‑stress, fast‑paced situations
- Strong multitasking ability and capacity to manage competing priorities simultaneously
- Ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and professionally both verbally and in writing
- Availability to work any assigned shift, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required
- Successful completion of the pre‑employment screening process, including a personal history statement and the Criticall computer‑based job skills assessment
- Prior experience in a communications, dispatch, or public safety environment
- Proficiency in data entry and general computer applications
- Experience operating radio and telephone communications equipment
- Familiarity with the Martinsville‑Henry County geographical area
Schedule:
The Martinsville‑Henry County 911 Communications Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Qualified candidates must be available and willing to work any assigned shift, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as operationally required.

A felony conviction is disqualifying for this position due to required access to the Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN)). - Conditional offer of employment issued to final candidates
- Post‑offer screenings— psychological evaluation, vision screening, and hearing screening, conducted after a conditional offer is made in accordance with applicable law
- Entry‑level Telecommunicator Certification through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)

- Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) Certification
