Job Duties
  • The practice is supported by a Nurse Manager who operates the health services system at the site.
  • Provide professional medical care and medication management to offenders with assistance from nursing staff.
  • Analyze and interpret patients’ histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Diagnose or treat acute health care problems, such as illnesses, infections, or injuries.
  • Recommend diagnostic or therapeutic interventions with attention to safety, cost, invasiveness, simplicity, acceptability, adherence, and efficacy.
  • Prescribe medications based on efficacy, safety, and cost as legally authorized.
  • Prescribe appropriate chemical or mechanical measures to assist offenders to improve behaviors.
  • Assist with preparation and modification of treatment plans and recommend appropriate programs.
  • Educate patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to individual circumstances.
  • Provide evidence-based health education to the offender population.
  • Be a primary member of the institution’s internal health services multidisciplinary team.

Wage position notes: This wage position is limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period (May 1 – April 30). The period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This wage position offers no state benefits.

Location clarification: This position is located at Haynesville Correctional Center in Richmond County, Virginia—not the City of Richmond. Richmond County is approximately 57 miles northeast of the City of Richmond.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited medical college.
  • Completion of an approved residency in a primary care specialty.
  • Licensed to practice medicine in the state of Virginia.
  • Board eligible or certified in a primary care specialty.
  • Extensive knowledge of information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities (including symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of mental illness.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) diagnostic criteria.
  • Knowledge of professional and ethical standards of practice and interventions appropriate for the assigned population.
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.
