Virginia's Community College System is soliciting applications for the position of Academic Tutor in English & Humanities within the MARC (Multigenerational Accessibility & Resource Center) in the Learning Resources Division at Virginia Highlands Community College.

Provide tutoring services to students enrolled at the college, assist faculty, staff, and visitors, and offer administrative, outreach, and clerical support to the MARC and the library as needed. Maintain a welcoming environment and support the learning community.
Responsibilities- Provide tutoring services to students in approved subject areas.
- Greet students, faculty, staff, and visitors upon entry into the MARC.
- Direct users to the MARC coordinator for tutoring appointments and assist in scheduling.
- Check students in upon arrival and maintain records of sessions.
- Serve patrons promptly and politely, including answering telephone calls and transferring as needed.
- Assist with receipt and unpacking of new materials; help move them to appropriate shelves.
- Maintain confidentiality and professional conduct with students.
- Assist the MARC coordinator with programming and events.
- Maintain the MARC physical area (organize, tidy space).
- Assist library staff as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Demonstrate a customer‑service mindset, strong communication skills, and good interpersonal/telephone skills.
- Maintain attention to detail, reliability, punctuality, and motivation to help students succeed.
- Maintain professionalism and kindness when interacting with all stakeholders.
- Grade of no less than B in the desired subject area (no C, D, F, W, I).
- Prior tutoring/teaching/student support experience.
- Availability for a flexible schedule that includes 29 hours per week.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, detail orientation.
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
- Education and/or experience equivalent to an Associate's Degree.
- Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Experience in community colleges or higher education settings preferred.
- Ability to tutor in multiple disciplines.
Eligible for emergency/essential personnel designation, unpaid emergency service, and potential advancement from part‑time to full‑time. Participation in college programming and professional development is available.
