Introduction
Pamunkey Regional Library (PRL) is seeking a forward-thinking library professional to help guide and strengthen our system-wide approach to collection management. Serving unique communities across our service area, PRL is committed to providing relevant, balanced, and accessible collections that support lifelong learning, curiosity, and connection. This position plays a critical role in shaping how materials are selected, acquired, organized, and evaluated across the library system.
Working collaboratively across departments, the successful candidate will use data, professional judgment, and community insight to ensure our physical and digital collections meet the informational, educational, and recreational needs of patrons of all ages. This Role
The Collection Management Librarian plays a central role in guiding and coordinating Pamunkey Regional Library's system-wide collection management activities. This position provides acquisitions, cataloging, and weeding functions to ensure collections are relevant, balanced, and responsive to community needs.
Working collaboratively with library staff, the Collection Management Librarian recommends materials for purchase, develops and maintains selection practices, and oversees procedures for acquiring and processing materials. This role ensures consistency in the application of cataloging standards and principles, including performing original cataloging and authority control work as needed.
The Collection Management Librarian uses data, collection analysis tools, and community information to evaluate collection performance, guide decision-making, and support continuous improvement. Responsibilities include maintaining physical and digital collections, managing electronic resources, coordinating the withdrawal of materials in the Integrated Library System (ILS), and compiling reports and statistics to inform planning and evaluation.
In addition, this position coaches, trains, and supports staff involved in collection management activities, fostering shared understanding of policies, best practices, and service goals while promoting efficient workflows and high-quality outcomes across the library system.
Responsibilities- Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a closely related field preferred; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and progressively responsible experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the position.
Preferences
Preferred candidates will demonstrate a strong combination of leadership, technical services, and collection management experience, along with the ability to work collaboratively in a system-wide environment.
Experience or demonstrated strengths in one or more of the following areas are preferred:
- Managing or coordinating daily operations within technical services, collection management, or related support units
- Applying cataloging principles and standards to ensure accuracy, consistency, and quality in bibliographic records
- Supporting or coordinating physical processing, materials handling, courier services, or similar operational functions
- Developing, maintaining, and evaluating library collections, including selection and acquisitions
- Managing or assisting with materials budgets, including monitoring expenditures and supporting spending priorities
- Working with integrated library systems (ILS) and related library technologies to improve workflows and service delivery
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software, including the ability to organize data, track statistics, and produce basic reports accurately and efficiently.
- Contributing to policies, procedures, and best practices for collection or materials services
- Collaborating across departments to enhance efficiency, communication, and internal customer service
- Communicating complex or technical information clearly and effectively to staff, supervisors, and leadership
The position may require travel to other branches within the system. A DMV check will be conducted for employees who drive while on Library business.
Work ScheduleMonday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30-5:00.
The selected candidate will serve a six-month provisional period.
Hiring Salary Range$48,034.39 - $74,453.31
