Title: Part-Time Reading Tutor (Grant Funded)
Reports To: Principal or Designee
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Summary: The Reading Tutor works with students in grades K-8 in small groups of five or less, who have been identified as needing additional support in early literacy. The Reading Tutor works side by side with Prince Edward County School’s Reading Team to help students improve early literacy skills, including phonemic awareness and fluency. The Reading Tutor will be required to collect data to monitor student progress and assist with the administration of the Virginia Language & Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) in the middle and end of the year.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Maintain a positive learning environment and respond to individual needs of students.
- Ensure district policies are observed during all activities.
- Support students with reading fluency.
- Reinforce phonics and decoding skills.
- Build vocabulary and word recognition.
- Provide one-on-one or small group support.
- Monitor student progress regularly.
- Encourage reading confidence and motivation.
- Collaborate with teachers on student needs.
- Create a safe classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
- Always keep all children in the classroom under supervision.
- Adhere to the daily schedule.
- Be familiar with fire exits, fire drill procedures, severe storm, and tornado warning procedures.
- Maintain confidentiality as defined by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE- Hold a high school diploma or have passed a high school equivalency examination approved by the Board of Education;
Bachelor’s Degree preferred. - Ability to relate to children, teachers, and other school staff.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, sit, stand, walk, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
