Art Teacher; part-time

Riverside School is a private school that serves students in grades K-8 with dyslexia and similar language-based learning differences. We provide one-on-one reading instruction, small class sizes, and a nurturing environment so that students can return to mainstream education fully prepared to realize their highest potential.

• It currently reports to the Director of Development
• It is a part-time exempt position that currently works Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM (days of the week could change from year to year)
• It teaches 10 classes per week, maximum class size of 10
• Expected to develop and lead after-school art classes (three 6-week sessions, twice weekly)

• Design and execute weekly K–8 lesson plans.
• Provide technical instruction across various media (graphite, acrylics, clay, etc.) while adapting methods to meet diverse student needs.
• Maintain an art room space that is neat and clean but also inspires creativity in students.
• Strictly enforce the safe use of tools (e.g., X-Acto knives, glue guns, kilns, or solvents).
• Actively partner with classroom teachers to integrate art into the broader curriculum and participate in staff meetings and professional development.
• Manage the annual art budget and inventory.
• Maintain and operate the on-site kiln according to manufacturer safety standards.
• Plan a school-wide Art Show, including mounting and labeling art work, to be viewed after school.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Bachelor’s degree in Art, Art Education, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
• Virginia teacher certificate or art therapist certification preferred
• Proven experience in a school or educational setting
• Strong conflict resolution, interpersonal communication, and independent project management skills.

• Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
• Physical agility to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead
• Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at times
