Summary

The Elementary School Teacher is responsible for creating a positive, engaging, and safe learning environment that supports the academic, social, emotional, and physical development of all students. The teacher plans and delivers standards-based instruction, assesses student progress, and collaborates with colleagues, families, and administrators to ensure student success. To develop and implement an instructional program that will effectively provide the best possible education for each student.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Prepares course objectives and outlines for course of study following curriculum guidelines and requirements of the district and state.
  • Complies with school and School Board policies and regulations.
  • Demonstrates mastery of the content area and assesses student performance using formative and summative assessments and uses data to guide instruction.
  • Maintains discipline in the classroom in an effort to maximize learning by implementing classroom management strategies that support positive behavior and student engagement.
  • Uses instructional and planning time effectively.
  • Works to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and parents concerning both the academic and behavioral progress of students.
  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • Assumes responsibility for the care of materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Works cooperatively with the administration and collegial peers for the overall successful operation of the school.
  • Develops and maintains a physical environment of the classroom conducive to effective learning.
  • Maintains accurate records and reports implemented by the administration.
  • Demonstrates professional growth by participating in professional development, faculty meetings, and school-related activities.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.

• Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional Teaching License with the appropriate elementary endorsement (or be eligible for an approved alternative licensure pathway).

• Must meet all licensure requirements set forth by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE).

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Evaluation

Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
