Position Summary
Under the direction of the school principal, plan and provide for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provide an atmosphere and an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervise students in a variety of school-related settings. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff, and the community.
Develop, select, and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintain appropriate records and follow required procedures and practices. Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
- Develop students’ technique for playing brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments and cover appropriate band literature styles for school and competitive performances.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
- Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
- Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals established by the Virginia Standards of Learning, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
- Teaches a variety of vastly different skills on different instruments simultaneously.
- Organizes and maintains a large inventory of instructional materials, music library, and equipment of high monetary value. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Prepare logistics and transportation for several after school events each year. Supervise large groups of students in activities outside of school hours and off campus.
- Plan and organize concerts and other public performances, including scheduling, production, logistics, and student supervision.
- Assist in the management of associated fundraising efforts and take responsibility for budgeted and fund raised money accounts.
- Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
- Utilizes assessment data to plan and improve instruction.
- Observes the individual learning style and progress of each student and seeks the assistance of division specialist(s) if learning problems are suspected.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, division policy, and administrative regulation.
- Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom.
- Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aides(s), volunteer(s) and substitute teachers, as well as, evaluates their job performance cooperatively with department heads as required.
- Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of assigned school.
- Thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures.
- Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment.
- Must have the ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
- Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both oral and written formats.
- Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board, elected officials, parents, students and the general public.
