Deputy Sheriff - School Resource Officer; SRO

Overview

School Resource Officers are assigned to County middle and high schools to provide information to the students, parents and staff regarding law enforcement and the criminal justice system. SRO’s maintain high visibility at the schools, attending student functions as well as teaching curriculum units and providing classroom presentations on varied topics.

• Enforce laws; investigating criminal activity; maintaining records and files; preparing reports; testifying in court
• Work collaboratively with schools to resolve problems that threaten the safety of the schools
• Reinforce clear expectations for appropriate behavior through enforcement of laws, law-related education, and involvement in crime prevention activities
• Possess the ability to engage students to help improve the relationship with students, increase the likelihood that students report criminal activity and help reduce delinquent behavior within schools and the community
• Must be able to identify and address security related issues within the school
• Provide classroom presentations on crime prevention and fundamental concepts and structure of the law
• Teach law related education, de-escalation techniques, and conflict resolution to students and staff
• Coordinate and oversee youth programs
• Coordinate security coverage for after school activities and events that produce large crowds

• Must possess current Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification
• 2 years of prior Law Enforcement experience
• Must have completed or be able to complete School Resource Officer basic course
• Graduation from high school or high school equivalency
• Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Must meet and maintain all Stafford County Sheriff’s department and State Criminal Justice System training and education requirements for position
• Required to be a United States citizen and must be 21 years of age at time of hire
• Posession of all qualifications as required by the Code of Virginia, the Department of Criminal Justice Services, and the Stafford County Sheriff's Office

Additional requirements include maintaining physical condition and abilities as described, ability to work under regular supervision, and potentially serving as essential personnel with mandatory reporting during closures.

$29.00 per hour + approximately 3% for every 2 years of certified DCJS law enforcement service

Full hiring range for this position $29.87- $48.67 per hour

This position is designated as essential and may be required to report to work during times when the local government/agencies are closed, is subject to call back and hold over to maintain minimum staffing 24/7.

The successful applicant must pass physical agilities testing, interview, polygraph examination, full background investigation to include a criminal history check, physical examination, psychological examination and drug and alcohol testing.

The work is heavy, involving exertion of various force requirements and activity, including climbing, lifting, and operating in diverse environmental conditions. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Formal administrative details include timekeeping, reporting lines to the School Resource Officer Sergeant, and adherence to all applicable laws and regulations.
