Adjunct Sociology Faculty (Part-Time) - Introduction to Sociology
Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) seeks a part-time adjunct faculty member to teach SOC 200:
Introduction to Sociology in a hybrid format. The course is a Passport and UCGS transfer course that introduces fundamental concepts and principles of sociology. The successful candidate will be committed to SVCC’s mission to provide high-quality education to the Southside Virginia community.
Job Overview
- Deliver instruction in a hybrid format, ensuring course materials, activities, and assessments meet established college standards.
- Maintain consistent student engagement through the Canvas Learning Management System.
- Design and implement assignments that promote college-level reading comprehension, critical thinking, and clear written communication.
- Use pre-developed assessments aligned with institutional learning outcomes and evaluate student work to support program and college-wide assessment.
- Monitor and document class attendance in compliance with college policies.
Responsibilities
- Introduce fundamental sociological concepts, theories, and research methods.
- Teach on topics including culture, race, social class, gender, major social institutions, and social change.
- Support both in-person and online components of the course.
- Assist students with varying abilities and diverse backgrounds.
- Participate in other duties as assigned, including community service obligations when required by the governor.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Sociology with at least 18 graduate semester hours from a regionally accredited institution.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal communication skills and ability to write syllabi and exams.
- Ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments.
- Commitment to the mission of the community college and student success.
Additional Considerations
- Teaching experience at the college level, particularly in face‑to‑face and online/hybrid modalities.
- Comfortable with instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom, and Canvas LMS.
- Experience working with community college students.
- Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.

Christanna Campus — Alberta, VA;
Mondays, 1:00 PM – 2:25 PM (Hybrid format). - Hiring range:
Per credit hour rate determined by experience and education. - Salary:
Negotiable. - Benefits:
