Adjunct Religion Faculty (Part-Time) - Introduction to the Study of Religion
Help students explore how religion is studied, defined, and understood across cultures and traditions. Join the Southside Virginia Community College faculty and teach REL 100 Introduction to the Study of Religion. This is a Passport and UCGS transfer course that explores the idea of religion as a general category and the methodology of academic religious study. The successful candidate must be committed to SVCC’s mission to provide high‑quality education to the Southside Virginia community.

Specific Duties
- Explore the concept of religion as a general academic category.
- Instruct students on how to study religion within a formal academic context.
- Examine common elements across various religions, including beliefs, practices, values, and community.
- Discuss spiritual experience, symbolism, and narrative as they relate to global religious traditions.
- Deliver instruction in a hybrid format, ensuring high‑quality course materials align with college standards.
- Maintain engagement through the college’s Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) for the online portion of the course.
- Monitor and document class attendance in compliance with college policies, maintaining accurate records and communicating with students and necessary departments as needed to support academic success.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
Qualifications (KSA's)- Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Religious Studies or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Interpersonal communication skills; ability to write syllabi and exams.
- Ability to develop learning strategies, curriculum, and assessments.
- Ability to work with students of varying abilities from diverse backgrounds.
- Understanding of and commitment to the mission of the community college and student success.
- Teaching experience at the college level, specifically with face‑to‑face and online/hybrid modalities.
- Competency using instructional technologies such as SMART boards, Zoom, and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
- Experience working with community college students.
- Demonstrated commitment to student engagement and academic success.
