General Description

The individual shall ensure that students have access to the resources necessary for academic and social development. Elementary level counselors work with teachers and parents to make sure that developmentally challenged students have the proper tools and guidance to effectively learn within their skill sets. They also ensure that curricula and programs address the developmental and educational needs of students.

Certification Requirements
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university and certification from an approved counselor education program.
  • At least 100 clock hours of clinical experience in the preK-6 setting.
  • Two years of successful, full-time teaching experience or two years of successful, full-time experience in guidance and counseling preferred.
Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Direct instruction, team teaching, developing learning activities and group activities.
  • Planned activities outside the classroom promoting academic, career or social/emotional development.
  • Responsive services counseling – in individual or small group settings; provide planned, short-term and goal-focused counseling.
  • Crisis response – provide support and assistance to students and families as they navigate crisis and emergency situations.
  • Consultation – share strategies supporting student achievement with parents, teachers, other educators and community organizations.
  • Collaboration – work with other educators, parents and the community to support student achievement.
  • Referrals – support for students and families to school or community resources for additional assistance and information.
  • Coordinates with teachers, administrators, resource specialists and/or community (e.g. service clubs, courts, child protective services, etc.) for the purpose of providing/receiving requested information and/or making recommendations.
  • Counsels students, parents, and guardians for the purpose of enhancing student success, academically, socially, and emotionally, in school.
  • Develops a variety of special programs and classes (e.g. group and teamwork, leadership, bullying, coping with divorce or death, social skills) for the purpose of providing information to assist students in the successful transition from elementary to secondary school or help with life and academic skills.
  • Monitors students' progress for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing student success.
  • Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. lesson plans, quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, audits, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Present information for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
  • Schedules student classes on a variety of topics for the purpose of helping students academically, socially and emotionally reach success in school.
  • Supervises assigned programs (e.g. scholarships, peer counseling, special education, ESL, etc.) for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for professional growth and achieving overall curriculum objectives.
  • Other duties as assigned by the principal.
Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school.
