Assistant Principal II - Secondary Level

The Assistant Principal serves as a key instructional and operational leader, supporting the Principal in planning, organizing, administering, and supervising the elementary school program. This role ensures a safe, positive, and academically rigorous learning environment while promoting student achievement, staff development, and family/community engagement.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Hold the Postgraduate Professional Certificate with an endorsement in Administration & Supervision K-12
  • Have at least three years of successful, full-time experience as a teacher, supervisor, or administrator, two years of which must have been at the appropriate level
  • Demonstrate the leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, and parents
Performance Responsibilities
1. Instructional Leadership
  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of the school's instructional program
  • Conduct classroom observations and provide actionable feedback to teachers
  • Analyze student achievement data to inform instructional decisions and school improvement planning
  • Assist with the implementation of the curriculum aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL)
  • Promote equitable practices and inclusive instruction for all student groups
2. School Operations & Management
  • Assist in the day-to-day administration of school operations, including scheduling and logistics
  • Support the development and management of the school budget and resource allocation
  • Coordinate transportation, cafeteria, custodial, and support services
  • Ensure compliance with school board policies, state regulations, and division procedures
  • Oversee student discipline, attendance, and behavioral interventions
  • Support implementation of PBIS/MTSS frameworks and restorative practices
  • Conduct parent conferences related to academic and behavioral concerns
  • Coordinate student services, including counseling, child study, and special education supports
4. Staff Supervision & Development
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and retaining high-quality staff
  • Participate in staff evaluations in alignment with Virginia performance standards
  • Facilitate professional development aligned with school and division goals
  • Foster a collaborative, high-performing professional culture
5. School Climate & Culture
  • Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive school environment
  • Lead initiatives that support student engagement, wellness, and belonging
  • Monitor school safety procedures, drills, and emergency protocols
  • Supervise student activities, arrival/dismissal, and common areas
6. Family & Community Engagement
  • Serve as a liaison between the school and families/community stakeholders
  • Support family engagement and community partnerships
  • Communicate school initiatives, expectations, and student progress effectively
  • Promote a positive public image of the school
7. Compliance & Accountability
  • Ensure adherence to:
    Virginia Department of Education regulations, Code of Virginia § 22.1 requirements, Local school board policies and administrative procedures
  • Coordinate standardized testing and accountability processes
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation
  • Serve as acting principal in the absence of the principal
  • Assume full responsibility for school operations and decision-making when delegated
Physical & Work Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, and supervision of students
  • Ability to respond to emergencies and manage crisis situations
Terms of Employment

12-month administration contract (Grade 7026), 260 days
