Structured Transition Sped Classroom Teacher
Appomattox Primary School is seeking a collaborative and student-centered special education teacher to support students with disabilities in inclusive general educational settings while providing specially designed instruction aligned to Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) to students in special education settings as well.
This position serves students across instructional environments through a combination of:
- Push-in support within general education classrooms
- Small-group and individualized specially designed instruction in special education classroom
- Collaboration with classroom teachers, interventionists, related service providers, and families
The teacher will have a homeroom of students, maintain a caseload of students receiving special education services, and will help ensure students access grade-level curriculum in the least restrictive environment appropriate to their individual needs.

Summary
Assist students in learning the subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, able and responsible individuals. Create conditions that will encourage and stimulate learning.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.
- Be professionally and personally responsible for the order and progress of classes under his/her authority direction and supervision.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials to provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to meet the needs of each student.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and approaches to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Prepare lessons for students assigned and demonstrates written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
- Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher instructional assistants, volunteers, and substitute teachers.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in congruency with those goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and project to communicate said objectives to students.
- Create an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers.
- Employ a variety of instructional techniques, technology and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
- Evaluate students’ academic and social growth using a variety of data sources; keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports.
- Strive to implement by instruction and action the division’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
- Select and requisition books and instructional materials and supplies and maintain required inventory records.
- Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
- Set an annual goal (goals) for improving student achievement, using the results of an initial assessment.
- Diagnose the instructional needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of division specialists as required.
- Administer, review and analyze class standardized tests in accordance with division testing programs.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, division policy, and administrative procedures.
- Attend staff meetings, PTO meetings, and serves on staff committees, as required.
- Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
