Job DescriptionGateway Academy is a public‑separate school that supports a small, diverse population of students who require day placement through their Individualized Educational Plan (IEP). Educators at Gateway Academy seek to help students meet individual long‑ and short‑term goals, including returning to their home schools.
Spotsylvania County Public Schools is seeking student‑focused Special Education Paraeducators to assist teachers and other professional practitioners by providing instructional support in self‑contained classrooms with students at Gateway Academy. This role is critical to Gateway Academy’s mission of supporting students and families by creating a safe and structured environment that maximizes a student's ability to achieve individualized goals.
Essential Job Functions- Assist students with the organization and completion of daily work assignments.
- Assist in maintaining a safe, nurturing, and healthy atmosphere, including social skill development and personal hygiene needs/toilet training.
- Follow established procedures for monitoring and redirecting student behavior when supervising small groups.
- Maintain and organize students' instructional materials and/or cumulative files.
- Administer and/or assist with preparing for various assessments for students as necessary.
- Use special skills such as sign language and advanced computer training to facilitate two‑way communication between the teacher and the student.
- Perform additional non‑instructional duties including cafeteria duty, bus duty, hall duty, and office duty.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of two (2) years working with students in an instructional, educational, or related setting.
- Special education teachers assigned to work with students with emotional disabilities should have been trained in MANDT methodology and should receive additional training, as appropriate, annually.
Employment may be offered as a 10‑Month (185 Day) contract, at a minimum of 7.5 hours worked per day. The position is evaluated annually. Additional compensation is awarded for credits earned toward advanced degrees.
