Job Description

NOVA Workforce is seeking an experienced instructor to deliver classroom and technical training that will prepare students to successfully pass the EPA 608 Universal certification exams. This is a non-credit, 42 instructional hours course for adult learners. Must be available to teach evenings or Saturday classes. The instructor will also be responsible for proctoring students’ exams.

  • Provide hands‑on instruction and practical training to prepare students for the EPA 608 Universal exams. Training should focus on exam objectives.
  • Prepare, teach, and evaluate assigned instructional materials (course outlines, syllabi, student handouts, hands‑on exercises, assessments, and training aids).
  • Evaluate students to ensure they are meeting learning objectives and are prepared for the certification exams.
  • Assist in class scheduling and program management.
  • Advise the program manager of needed supplies and materials for the class.
  • Maintain a hazard‑free environment and practice safety in the lab(s) or classroom.
  • Have working knowledge of computer applications and the ability to use a computer for class presentations.
Essential Functions

As a part of the primary responsibility to provide quality instruction, the College expects each faculty member to meet assigned classes regularly, submit required records and reports routinely, teach the prescribed courses with the established texts, and adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with College policies, procedures, and regulations.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Required Qualifications
  • Practical application of the principles of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
  • Proficiency in installation and service of HVACR equipment.
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to teach the fundamental and advanced concepts of installing and servicing HVACR equipment.
  • Ability to design, supervise, and evaluate lab assignments to demonstrate student proficiency.
  • Excellent organizational and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to communicate complex subjects in a clear and engaging way.
  • Ability to work with groups of varying ages, skill levels, and socio‑economic backgrounds.
  • Use a wide variety of teaching methods to promote learning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Must be a self‑starter and innovative thinker.
  • Combination of education and industry credentials to demonstrate content expertise.
  • Must hold an active EPA 608 Universal certification.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in the field of HVAC/R.
  • One (1) year’s experience teaching.

  • Previous experience in an educational or training setting.
  • Experience teaching adult learners.
  • Experience in curriculum design and development.
  • Experience teaching “boot camp” style training courses.
  • Prior experience teaching in higher education.
  • Experience teaching in classroom, hybrid, and online formats.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency.
  • Must reside in Virginia, Maryland, or the District of Columbia.
