Educational Interpreter

Summary

Facilitates communications for deaf/hard‑of‑hearing students during the school day, for academic and extracurricular activities; delivers the interpretation of audio‑visual information in alignment with Individual Educational Plan (IEP) documents and in service to school needs; utilizes a variety of visual tools to meet student needs and support equal access to interpreted materials; participates in school functions and activities such as field trips and extracurricular activities;

collaborates and provides technical assistance to school‑based administrators, teachers, students, and staff.

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
• Hold a Virginia Quality Assurance Screening (VQAS) Level I certification and/or an Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certification.
• Knowledge of the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf (RID) code of ethics and/or the Testing, Evaluation, and Certification Unit (TECUnit) code of conduct.
• Knowledge of methods, materials, practices, procedures, and programs related to deaf culture.
• Proficiency in the use of technology.
• Ability to apply knowledge to the needs and requirements of a public school system.
• Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with culturally diverse students and staff.
• Ability to provide guidance and maintain confidentiality, at all times.
• Ability to participate in professional development activities.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Participation in an appropriate professional development training program.
• Qualification as an educational interpreter as determined by the Virginia Department of Education.
• Hold a national interpreter and/or transliterator certification.
