Job Summary

Under direction of the school principal, plan and provide appropriate learning experiences for students. Create an environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social and emotional development for all students. Supervise students in a variety of school related settings; monitor and evaluate student outcomes; communicate with students, parents, staff and community. Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students.

Maintain appropriate records and follow required procedures and practices. Monitor the appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

Essential Functions
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Plan a program of study that is appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students and meets the individual needs and abilities of the students.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in a fair and just manner.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and provide written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
  • Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals established by the Virginia Standards of Learning; establish clear objectives for lessons, units and projects and communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media consistent with the physical limitations of the location and the needs of the students.
  • Implement the division’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assess student accomplishments on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Utilize assessment data to plan and improve instruction.
  • Observe individual learning style and progress of each student; seek assistance from division specialists if learning problems are suspected.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, division policy and administrative regulation.
  • Assist the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and the classroom.
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education‑related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested.
  • Plan and supervise assignments for teacher aides, volunteers and substitute teachers; evaluate their performance cooperatively with department heads as required.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of assigned school.
  • Thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures.
  • Skill in use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment.
  • Ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both oral and written formats.
  • Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board, elected officials, parents, students and the general public.
Qualifications,

Education and Experience
  • Hold a valid Virginia Department of Education teacher’s license or certification with appropriate endorsement for the subject area; or
  • Completed the requirements for a Virginia certificate or license and filed an application for it; or
  • Will qualify for a Virginia certificate or license prior to the effective date of employment.
  • Prior teaching experience and/or student teaching is strongly preferred.
