Job DescriptionPost Oak Middle School is seeking a School Counselor to join our team for the school year. As a School Counselor, you will provide individual and group counseling services to address the needs and concerns of a diverse student population and support their academic goals and social/emotional development.
- Advises and counsels students regarding academic, career and social/emotional concerns.
- Assesses individual, group, and program needs and plans appropriate use of time, materials, and resources.
- Uses assessment strategies and instruments to set short-term and long-term goals, monitors goal progress and supports student achievement.
- Evaluates student progress; provides prompt, specific evaluative feedback; maintains appropriate records.
- Provides mediation services for student conflicts with assistance of administration.
- Works with teachers, counselors, and administration to prepare students for transition from middle school to high school.
- Maintains confidentiality of student and school personnel information.
- Consults with parents, teachers and administrators on specific matters.
- Assists in referrals for specialized services beyond those provided by the school.
- Collaborates with staff, families, and community resources to support diverse student population.
- Works collegially with peers, school personnel, and community to promote student learning.
- Models professional, moral, and ethical standards and personal integrity.
- Creates a supportive learning environment encouraging social interaction, engagement, and self‑motivation.
- Participates in curriculum development, faculty committees, and student activities as requested.
- Reports any pertinent information to building administrators in case of child endangerment, neglect, or abuse.
- Maintains licensure at state and/or national level, and commits to professional growth.
- Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
- Successful completion of a state‑approved Counselor Preparation Program.
- Ability to obtain appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
Employment may be offered as an 11‑Month (220‑Day) contract, with a minimum of 7.5 hours worked per day. The position is evaluated annually. Additional compensation may be awarded for credits earned toward additional degrees.
