Berkeley Elementary Special Education (Autism) Teacher - 26/27 SY

Spotsylvania County Public Schools, a division comprising 31 schools and serving over 24,000 students, seeks a Special Education Teacher for Berkeley Elementary.

As a teacher, you will provide specialized instruction in self‑contained classrooms for students whose needs cannot be met in a general education environment. You will develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) and participate in a multidisciplinary team to support students with disabilities.

• Provide specialized instruction and educational planning for students not served in general classrooms.
• Develop, implement, and annually review student IEPs in accordance with federal, state, and local procedures; maintain records of performance and progress.
• Assist in screening, evaluating, and recommending placements within the division’s special education program.
• Serve as a member of an interdisciplinary team to provide appropriate education for students with disabilities.
• Conduct parent conferences and/or home visits as needed.
• Comply with all special‑education procedures, including the Division-wide Special Education Handbook and Virginia State Regulations.

Required

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Ability to obtain the appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
• An acceptable rating of prior teaching experience, as applicable.

Preferred

• Current Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License with a specific endorsement.
• Prior teaching experience within a public school system.

• Teachers working with students with emotional disabilities must have training in MANDT methodology and receive annual additional training as appropriate.
• Teachers working with students on the autism spectrum must be knowledgeable in evidence‑based practices such as Applied Behavior Analysis, alternative communication methods, modeling, and structured teaching (visual scheduling, physical structure, and support).
• Teachers working with students with Severe Intellectual Disabilities must have training in personal hygiene, specialized equipment, augmentative communication, seizure protocol, specialized feeding protocol, body positioning, tracheotomy care, and suctioning.

Contract of 10 months (200 days), minimum 7.5 hours per day. Position is evaluated annually. Additional compensation may be awarded for credits earned toward advanced degrees.

Salary: $54,902 to $104,737 per year.
