Under the direction of the school principal, plan and provide appropriate learning experiences for students in early childhood exceptional education. Provide an atmosphere conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of all students. Supervise and monitor student outcomes, communicate with students, parents, staff, and the community through conferences and IEP meetings. Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team, develop instructional plans and materials, maintain records, and ensure proper use of equipment.
EssentialFunctions
- Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times and locations.
- Plan a program of study that meets individual student needs and aligns with Virginia Standards of Learning.
- Create a classroom environment conducive to learning, establish rules, and maintain order fairly.
- Prepare for classes and provide written evidence of preparation upon request.
- Employ varied instructional techniques and media to meet learner needs.
- Use assessment data to plan and improve instruction, provide progress reports.
- Observe student learning style, seek assistance from specialists when needed.
- Take precautions to protect students, equipment, and facilities.
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and policy.
- Assist administration in implementing policies governing student conduct.
- Be available to students and parents outside instructional day when required.
- Plan and supervise assignments for aides, volunteers, and substitutes, evaluating their performance cooperatively with department heads.
- Maintain professional competence and attend staff meetings and committees.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of practices, methods, and techniques used in supervising school functions.
- Knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures.
- Proficient in personal computers and related software.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to motivate others to achieve their potential.
- Ability to establish and maintain productive relationships with colleagues, board, parents, students, and the public.
Education and Experience
- Hold a valid Virginia Department of Education teacher license or certification with appropriate endorsement.
- Or have completed the requirements and filed an application for a Virginia certificate or license.
- Or will obtain the required license prior to the effective date of employment.
- Prior teaching or student teaching experience strongly preferred.
- Alternatives acceptable at the discretion of the School Board.
- Occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds.
- Regular speaking, hearing, handling, standing, walking, sitting, reaching, repetitive motions; occasional pushing or pulling.
- Standard vision requirements.
- Vocal communication for instructions and detailed information.
- Exposure to outdoor weather, blood borne pathogens; may require protective equipment.
- Moderate noise environment (e.g., business office, light traffic).
Possession or ability to acquire the required license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for the position.
