Responsibilities
  • Implements the assigned program of study.
  • Develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Monitors student progress toward achieving instructional objectives and goals outlined in the IEPs.
  • Maintains and upgrades professional skills.
  • Teaches rules of conduct.
  • Maintains order in the classroom and on the playground when applicable.
  • Counsels pupils when adjustment and academic problems arise.
  • Discusses pupils’ academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents. Keeps attendance and grade records as required by the school.
  • Coordinates class field trips when applicable. Works cooperatively with the total staff.
  • Assumes responsibility for the care of materials, equipment, and facilities.
  • Assumes responsibility for maintaining a neat, safe environment and promotes positive interaction among students.
  • Encourages self‑direction and self‑motivation and demonstrates knowledge of the subject(s) being taught.
  • Utilizes a variety of appropriate materials and resources.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned by the Principal and the Special Education Director.
Qualifications
  • Must possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education or a related field.
  • Must possess Virginia State Teaching License with appropriate endorsement to teach special education.
  • Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in regular classrooms, outdoors, and on the phonee;

physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
