Job DutiesTo provide quality instructions and meet the individual needs of students in the areas of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and General Educational Diploma (GED). Additionally, to meet the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements. This is an hourly position with no state benefits.
Minimum Qualifications- Demonstrated ability to facilitate other instructors.
- Demonstrated ability to engage students in one‑on‑one teaching of all five subjects and supervise students and aides in a classroom setting.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records.
- Knowledge and experience of policy and procedure governing adult education.
- Must possess working knowledge of all facets of the basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs.
- Demonstrated competency in the relevant field of current licensure.
- Demonstrated ability to work with students in a classroom/lab environment.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant educational field, preferably with a major or minor in high school math, science, or another relevant subject.
- Experience teaching adults and/or youth and knowledge of policy and procedure governing adult education.
- Licensure:
Must possess a Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional Teaching License from the Virginia Department of Education (VADOE) or qualify for reciprocity from another state and without deficiencies. - Must submit all documentation for a Virginia Teaching License within 90 days of employment and satisfy all requirements within a year if seeking reciprocity.
- Master’s degree with a major or minor in a relevant educational field.
- Prefer knowledge and experience of policy and procedures governing adult correctional education.
- Prefer experience teaching adults and/or youth in a correctional or alternative education setting.
- Experience and knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections’ institutional policies and procedures.
- Advanced knowledge and experience in correctional education classroom management.
- Knowledge, experience, and ability to supervise students and inmate aides in a correctional facility.
- Advanced knowledge and success rate in General Educational Development (GED) preparation and completion.
