Adjunct Faculty - World Languages (Chinese) Job Summary
Adjunct faculty members are responsible for effectively planning and teaching courses in the designated discipline/field of study to students from a variety of academic backgrounds and experiences. Teaching may include face‑to‑face, remote, and online formats. Adjunct faculty may teach up to 12 credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and up to 8 credit hours during the summer session depending on student enrollment and staffing needs.
The adjunct faculty appointment contains no expectation or guarantee of continued employment.
Must reside in the (DC, VA, MD) DMV area.
Responsibilities- Teach specific classes in the designated discipline.
- Develop course syllabi and instructional materials.
- Maintain records, assign grades, and assess student progress.
- Adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of NOVA and the VCCS.
- Maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization.
- Meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports routinely.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned and to assist the agency or state government in the event of an emergency declared by the Governor.
KeySkills and Qualifications
- Commitment to communicate in the target language 90% or more of the time during instruction.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and native or near‑native oral and written skills in the language of instruction.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Excellent oral/written communication skills and native or near‑native oral and written English skills.
- Ability to work with a diverse student population.
- Ability to use instructional technology.
- Master’s degree in the language of instruction or a Master’s degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours of coursework in the language of instruction from a regionally accredited institution.
- Track record of effective community college or K‑12 teaching experience.
- Prior experience teaching in higher education.
- Experience with both on‑campus and online teaching.
- Experience teaching in classroom, hybrid, and online formats.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive working and learning environment.
- Experience teaching students from diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of proficiency.
