Title: Building Trades Teacher:
Halifax Correctional Unit 23
Responsibilities:
- Provide effective Career and Technical instruction in the assigned trade area.
- Assist assigned students in completing required competencies for the trade area.
- Demonstrate effective classroom or lab management.
- Ensure that the lab is operated in compliance with all aspects of safety management.
- Maintain accurate and current student records.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to engage students in one‑on‑one teaching and work with students and inmate aides in a classroom/lab environment.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records and familiarity with policies and procedures governing adult education.
- Working knowledge of basic adult education field, adult literacy, and computer software appropriate for program needs.
- Experience maintaining classroom equipment and inventories; competency in the related field of current trade licensure.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- At least two years full‑time work or 2000 hours of verifiable experience in the last five years in the relevant field/trade area for a teaching certificate.
- Eligibility for a Journeyman or Master Electrician/Plumbing/Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning (HVAC) License/Certification or any other Industrial/Technical Professional License issued by DPOR.
- Eligibility for a teaching certificate by the Department of Education.
- If a teacher/trade license from the Department of Education is not currently held, submit all documentation for a provisional license to the licensure designee for VADOC within the first 90 days of employment.
- Obtain a provisional license within the 1‑year probationary period, an employee responsibility required for continuing employment at the Department of Corrections.
